Our unsolicited business of the Month is S.C. Johnson & Son of Racine, WI.

 

There are few locations on the planet with people who have not used a product from S.C. Johnson & Son at some time or another.  The company makes a very wide variety of products from every day household items such as Glade air fresheners, Windex glass cleaner, Pledge furniture products, Drano drain cleaner, ZipLoc storage bags, and other common products, to the not so obvious or "Wow...that's a S.C. Johson product?", like Off mosquito repellent, Raid pest control products, and Grand Prix auto care products.

 

Beyond the extensive product offering, S.C. Johnson is a company that is all about people.  The company maintains close ties to the community at large and even closer ties to its employees and retirees.  With operations in more than 70 countries with 12,000 employees, there are a lot of towns lucky enough to have a community oriented company like S.C. Johnson in the neighborhood.  When an employee or retiree makes a significant contribution in the community, or otherwise make valuable contributions to society they become eligible for the H.F. Johnson Community Service Award.  Aside from the personal recognition, Johnson also gives awards of $5,000 and $500 to winners and honorable mention employees/retirees as donations to their favorite non-profit community organizations.

 

Retirees are pretty much treated as active employees at S.C. Johnson.

They receive benefits comparable to those given to regular employees, including medical, dental, vision, long-term care, and life insurance.  Not too many companies are doing this!  The 1,700 or so S.C Johnson company retirees also get discounts on company products.  The company maintains communications with them and offers them temporary work assignments and even consulting/contract work through a third-party placement agency.

 

It should come as no surprise that S.C. Johnson wants to keep in touch with its retirees.  This is a forward thinking company that understands the value of knowledge and experience in the workplace.   It is also a company that knows the value of an educated work force.  Anyone working 20 hours per week, or more, can take advantage of the several learning opportunities offered by the company.  An employee can take an e-learning course, take courses on-site (Racine Plant), or receive tuition reimbursement for college or certification courses.
